It&#8217;s not <i>bad<\/i>; the arrangement is solid, if a bit overwrought, and the recording demonstrates that Ryo can work with real singers as well as Hatsune Miku. It may well be one of the better songs in the tournament. But I don&#8217;t hear anything remarkable in it. I&#8217;ve listened to it several times, and as soon as it ends, I can&#8217;t remember a single phrase well enough to hum.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve gone through all the tournament entries now, and <a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/wp\/2013\/08\/04\/notes-mostly-off-key\/\" target=\"_blank\">what I said earlier<\/a> stands. (I&#8217;ll admit that I didn&#8217;t listen to each and every one all the way through. Sometimes, if a song didn&#8217;t catch my interest after the first verse and refrain, I skipped to the middle to see if there were any surprises there. There weren&#8217;t.)<\/p>\n<p>A few further notes:<\/p>\n<p>1. Radiohead? Really? Gah. At least Yes is worth listening to. Radiohead is allegedly brilliant, but whiny twit Thom spoils everything they do.<\/p>\n<p>2. The more homogenized, pasteurized pap I hear, the more I appreciate forthright rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll like &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2zm3eAWU6gE\" target=\"_blank\">Ride on Shooting Star<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3. Evidently Ali Project is out of favor these days. I expected at least &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EP253SZYSJc\" target=\"_blank\">Coppelia no Hitsugi<\/a>&#8221; to make the cut.<\/p>\n<p>4. While the majority of the nominees were new to me, most of the ones I judged to be good I was already familiar with. I did find a few songs worth adding to my playlists, though. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NkYYYew8CUI\" target=\"_blank\">Forces<\/a>&#8221; sounds like <i><b>Karkador<\/b><\/i>-era <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7W4T10uN_Cg\" target=\"_blank\">P-Model<\/a> \u2014 no surprise, since it&#8217;s by Susumu Hirasawa. I might have to track down the <i><b>Berserk<\/b><\/i> soundtrack. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fktjfL7mj6s\" target=\"_blank\">Hanaji<\/a>&#8221; has a pleasantly trashy psychobilly feel, and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dTc_x2hbhCQ\" target=\"_blank\">Shoujo S<\/a>&#8221; (which reminds me of The Monkees for some reason) rocks nicely.<\/p>\n<p>5. Curiously, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_fuL7xWEcgM\" target=\"_blank\">opening<\/a> and ending themes for <i><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.funimation.com\/the-tatami-galaxy\" target=\"_blank\">The Tatami Galaxy<\/a><\/b><\/i> sound better separated from the animation. The wispy vocals in the latter song, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lMQK5MbIb1E\" target=\"_blank\">Kami-sama no lu Toori<\/a>,&#8221; are peculiarly effective combined with the spooky synths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[ASFS] Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari &#8211; (Bakemonogatari ED) from jacklong on Vimeo.
