{"id":14225,"date":"2015-09-05T13:51:12","date_gmt":"2015-09-05T18:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/?p=14225"},"modified":"2015-09-18T12:06:45","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T17:06:45","slug":"above-the-hot-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/above-the-hot-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"Above the hot zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I expected that at least one of the many active volcanoes on <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanocafe.wordpress.com\/2013\/07\/22\/southern-japan-calderas\/\" target=\"_blank\">caldera-ridden<\/a> Kyushu would land on the New Decade Volcano Program at Volcano Caf\u00e9, though I wasn&#8217;t sure which it would be: Aira, Aso, or one of the less-publicized ones. This weekend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcanocafe.org\/a-wedge-of-worry-aso-caldera-ndvp-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">NDVP #4 turned out to be the Aso Caldera<\/a> and, yes, it is potentially extremely nightmarish.<\/p>\n<p>There are three more to go. From the comments to the Caf\u00e9 post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>BillG: So this is #4\u2026. I can\u2019t imagine there are three worse scenarios..<\/p>\n<p>Henrik: Trust me Bill, there are. One marginally more so, one decidedly worse and the final one so utterly mind-blowing that eventually Hollywood will make a blockbuster movie of it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would guess that one of those three is either <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/09\/volcanic-rumbles-mean-magma-might-seeping-naples\/\" target=\"_blank\">Campi Flegrei<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanocafe.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/07\/monte-somma-vesuvius\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vesuvius<\/a>; the other two, I have no idea. I note that five of the volcanoes announced in the NDVP so far are in Asia and none in South America, and there are a lot of interesting mountains and lakes in Central and South America.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the Nakadake crater at Aso <a href=\"http:\/\/www.data.jma.go.jp\/svd\/volcam\/data\/volc_img.php\" target=\"_blank\">at the JMA site<\/a>.
