Germination is usually close to 100%. This must have been a bad batch of seeds, though my source has been reliable in the past.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. The flowers are about two inches in diameter. They&#8217;re supposed to open in the evening and close in the morning, but these have done the opposite \u2014 not that I&#8217;m complaining. The plants are about a foot tall and probably will grow taller, though I doubt that they&#8217;ll reach the three feet that some sources claim. The leaves are long, thin and deeply lobed; they look skeletal, and the plant overall is scrawny. Should you grow it in your garden, I suggest giving it leafier companions.<\/p>\n<p><i>Mentzelia<\/i> is a genus of the <i>Loasaceae<\/i>, a family known for fine flowers and stinging hairs.<span id='easy-footnote-2-164196' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/more-yellow-3\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-164196' title='&lt;i&gt;Phacelia&lt;\/i&gt; belongs to another family with stinging plants, though &lt;i&gt;P. campanularia&lt;\/i&gt; is inoffensive. (Supposedly some people find the plants irritate their skin. I&amp;#8217;ve had no problems myself.)'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> <i>Mentzelias<\/i> don&#8217;t bite, but they do have barbed hairs that can cling to fabric and fur. The stems and leaves feel like sandpaper.<\/p>\n<p><i>Mentzelia lindleyi<\/i> is supposed to be heat- and drought-tolerant and bloom for two months<span id='easy-footnote-3-164196' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/more-yellow-3\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-164196' title='One source says &amp;#8220;from mid spring to early autumn,&amp;#8221; but I am skeptical.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>.
