Back in 1958, long before Peter Falk yelled &#8220;Serpentine&#8221; at him, he wrote a minor classic science fiction story, &#8220;People Soup.&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-2-173127' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/chickens-st-bernards-banjos-and-bagpipes\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-173127' title='Ten years later he made a short film of the story, starring his sons. I haven&amp;#8217;t seen it, but I expect you can find it on YouTube.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> You can read it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/51397\/51397-h\/51397-h.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s an <a href=\"https:\/\/newcriterion.com\/blogs\/dispatch\/empire-burlesque-13368\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition of Komar &#038; Melamid&#8217;s art<\/a> in New Jersey. I&#8217;d like to see it, but it&#8217;s a bit far to pedal. I wrote briefly about the duo <a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/still-life-with-marx-and-engels\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. The <em>New Criterion<\/em> article, worth reading though it is, omits one noteworthy project of theirs, a collaboration with composer David Soldier to produce examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubu.com\/sound\/komar.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8220;most wanted&#8221; and &#8220;least wanted&#8221; pieces of music<\/a>. The &#8220;most wanted&#8221; song is inevitably drivel that not even Vernon Reid&#8217;s guitar can redeem, but people do like drivel, as I constantly rediscover.
