These operatic paraphrases fell out of favor in the austere 20th century, and nowadays the only one you might hear is Liszt&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Un9v3kPALk8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R\u00e9miniscences de Don Juan<\/a>,&#8221; based on themes from Mozart&#8217;s <em><strong>Don Giovanni<\/strong><\/em>. It&#8217;s a shame. They may not be great music, but they can be fun.<\/p>\n<p>In this 21st century, something similar is evolving in Japan. Here&#8217;s a piece based on Yuki Kajiura&#8217;s music for <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/puella-magi-madoka-magica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madoka Magica<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, arranged and performed by &#8220;Animenz.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4xVyBmkEZX4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a more ambitious piece, based on themes from <strong><em>Gunbuster<\/em><\/strong>, performed by Yui Morishita, a.k.a. &#8220;Pianeet.&#8221; (It&#8217;s not clear whether it&#8217;s his own arrangement, but I suspect that it is.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nD9l4s0c4ig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>And another theme from <em>Madoka<\/em>, arranged and performed by Morishita.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cnP_u-vqIDk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Morishita is particularly interesting. Besides playing anime music, he is also an Alkan specialist. The reclusive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles-Valentin_Alkan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles-Valentin Morhange<\/a>, who changed his name to &#8220;Alkan,&#8221; was of the same generation as Liszt and Chopin and wrote notoriously difficult piano music. Morishita has recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.jp\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss?__mk_ja_JP=%E3%82%AB%E3%82%BF%E3%82%AB%E3%83%8A&amp;url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=YUI+MORISHITA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three CDs thus far of Alkan&#8217;s music<\/a>. I&#8217;d like to embed here the video of his rendition of Alkan&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=m-U_CI2G9Ng\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Le chemin de fer<\/a>,&#8221;<span id='easy-footnote-1-41630' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/a-whole-lot-of-notes\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-41630' title='&amp;#8220;Le chemin de fer&amp;#8221; may be the earliest representation of a choo-choo train in music.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> which has particularly good sound and shows the finger gymnastics from several angles, but for no obvious reason I can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>You can find more of Morishita performing both anime tunes and Alkan on YouTube. I think he just might have the chops to make proper Lisztian paraphrases of anime themes that any fan of piano music will enjoy, and I hope he does. I&#8217;d really like to hear a good &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/noir\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Noir<\/a>&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchyroll.com\/cowboy-bebop\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cowboy Bebop<\/a>&#8221; fantasy.<\/p>\n<p>For those who are interested in extreme piano, there is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alkansociety.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alkan Society<\/a>. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s based in Great Britain, and its events are a wee bit inconvenient for Kansans to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newenglishreview.org\/custpage.cfm?frm=189099&amp;sec_id=189099\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a recent article on Jewish comedian-musicians<\/a>, which oddly spends quite a bit of time discussing Alkan.<\/p>\n<p>*****<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bach.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-42661\" src=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Bach-640x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who am I?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/weta.org\/fm\/community\/composers\/bach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You are Johann Sebastian Bach.
