Here are three recent ones of churches built in the 1950s and 1960s. None of them look like traditional churches, but they serve their purpose, and any of them would be preferable to the Taj Mahony.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stjudewichita.org\/our-parish\/history\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">St. Jude<\/a> (completed in 1967) website claims that its architecture was ahead of its time. Well, maybe, but to me it looks like your basic shoebox.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-vr=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tancos\/48134855063\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"St. Margaret Mary Catholic church\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48134855063_eab7026745_o.jpg\" width=\"8000\" height=\"4000\" alt=\"St. Margaret Mary Catholic church\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smmwichita.com\/home\/history\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">St. Margaret Mary<\/a> (dedicated 1955; the &#8220;dropped&#8221; ceiling dates to 1992), with its ceiling cutout spanning the length of the church, is a variation on the shoebox.<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" data-vr=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tancos\/48134863058\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" title=\"Christ the King Catholic Church\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/48134863058_fe9d3eea50_o.jpg\" width=\"8000\" height=\"4000\" alt=\"Christ the King Catholic Church\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The circular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctkwichita.org\/welcome\/history\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Christ the King<\/a> (dedicated 1968) is definitely not a shoebox. It looks to me like something you would find on another planet built by friendly aliens. The parishioners I&#8217;ve spoken to are proud of it, and you can certainly <a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/slightly-askew\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">do worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Previous, more traditional-style Wichita churches: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/st-anthony-catholic-church-wichita\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">St. Anthony<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.360cities.net\/image\/cathedral-of-the-immaculate-conception-september-10-2015\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the names of the churches at the lower left corners of the images to see the panoramas larger.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my ongoing projects is to make panoramas of Wichita area Catholic churches.
