Surprisingly, I have four \u2014 but only four, and <i>Thriller<\/i> is not among them.<\/p>\n<p>I thought it might be fun to do the opposite: compile a list of LPs in my collection that almost no one else has. I&#8217;m including only albums on vinyl; if I were to include CDs and digital files, I could easily list hundreds, maybe thousands, of obscure recordings. Thompson was still learning his craft as a songwriter then, but the record has worn well.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Seatrain - Outwear The Hills\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5DSatJB4M7U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><i>Sea Train<\/i> \u2014 One of the worst-selling albums<span id='easy-footnote-1-63505' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/not-thrilled\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-63505' title='by a noteworthy band'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of all time, period, with one of the lousiest covers ever (the cover in the video is from the CD reissue, which was prettied-up a bit). After some personnel changes, a subtle name change and a coat of George Martin gloss varnish, they had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=War3BgTQ68Q\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">small hit<\/a> and introduced thousands of hippies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x7F7kF3T32U\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bluegrass fiddle<\/a>, but I like their earlier album better.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Back Door - Vienna Breakdown  (1972)\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wk_Ub1Xx8ig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><i>Back Door<\/i> \u2014 Sometimes you&#8217;ll find the tune in the video called &#8220;Jive Grind,&#8221; which was its title on the American release.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Norman Blake \u2013 Old Grey Mare ( 1976, Bluegrass )\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b6JEXdBSNIg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Norman Blake, <i>Whiskey before Breakfast<\/i> \u2014 One of the highlights of the first bluegrass festival I ever attended was Blake&#8217;s set, which included &#8220;Old Grey Mare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sinking Spell\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FOoo-hYsuy0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Michael Mantler, <i>The Hapless Child<\/i> \u2014 Mantler&#8217;s settings of Edward Gorey stories, narrated by Robert Wyatt. Musicians include Carla Bley, keyboards; Steve Swallow, bass; Jack DeJohnette, drums; Terje Rypdal, guitar. The track above apparently was included in a later Wyatt compilation. Other musicians include Dick Heckstall-Smith, saxes; Dave Greenslade, keyboards; Tony Reeves, bass; James Litherland, guitar and vocals. Instead, I focused on collecting classical records, particularly piano music.
