So, here&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fadedpage.com\/books\/20160525\/html.php\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Macavity, the Mystery Cat<\/a>,&#8221; which I recited to my bored and fidgety classmates at grade school #4.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Macavity&#8217;s a Mystery Cat: he&#8217;s called the Hidden Paw\u2014<br \/>\nFor he&#8217;s the master criminal who can defy the Law.<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad&#8217;s despair:<br \/>\nFor when they reach the scene of crime\u2014<i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Macavity, Macavity, there&#8217;s no one like Macavity,<br \/>\nHe&#8217;s broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.<br \/>\nHis powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,<br \/>\nAnd when you reach the scene of crime\u2014<i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><br \/>\nYou may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air\u2014<br \/>\nBut I tell you once and once again, <i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Macavity&#8217;s a ginger cat, he&#8217;s very tall and thin;<br \/>\nYou would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.<br \/>\nHis brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly domed;<br \/>\nHis coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.<br \/>\nHe sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;<br \/>\nAnd when you think he&#8217;s half asleep, he&#8217;s always wide awake.<\/p>\n<p>Macavity, Macavity, there&#8217;s no one like Macavity,<br \/>\nFor he&#8217;s a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.<br \/>\nYou may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square\u2014<br \/>\nBut when a crime&#8217;s discovered, then <i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)<br \/>\nAnd his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard&#8217;s.<br \/>\nAnd when the larder&#8217;s looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,<br \/>\nOr when the milk is missing, or another Peke&#8217;s been stifled,<br \/>\nOr the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair\u2014<br \/>\nAy, there&#8217;s the wonder of the thing! <i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>And when the Foreign Office find a Treaty&#8217;s gone astray,<br \/>\nOr the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,<br \/>\nThere may be a scrap of paper in the hall or on the stair\u2014<br \/>\nBut it&#8217;s useless to investigate\u2014<i>Macavity&#8217;s not there!<\/i><br \/>\nAnd when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:<br \/>\n&#8216;It must have been Macavity!&#8217;\u2014but he&#8217;s a mile away.<br \/>\nYou&#8217;ll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,<br \/>\nOr engaged in doing complicated long division sums.<\/p>\n<p>Macavity, Macavity, there&#8217;s no one like Macavity,<br \/>\nThere never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.<br \/>\nHe always has an alibi, and one or two to spare:<br \/>\nAt whatever time the deed took place\u2014MACAVITY WASN&#8217;T THERE!<br \/>\nAnd they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known<br \/>\n(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)<br \/>\nAre nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time<br \/>\nJust controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity-640x448.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"448\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-73084\" srcset=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity-640x448.jpg 640w, http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity-1024x717.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity-768x538.jpg 768w, http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Macavity.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/a-thought\/#comments\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a comment on a recent post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/fillyjonk.blogspot.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fillyjonk<\/a> mentioned that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartoonbrew.com\/feature-film\/why-steven-spielbergs-hand-drawn-adaptation-of-cats-never-made-it-past-development-178296.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">there were plans<\/a> to give <i><b>Cats<\/b><\/i> a traditionally-animated movie version, with Steven Spielberg at the helm. While I would have preferred that Lloyd Webber <em>et al<\/em> had left Eliot&#8217;s poems alone, this probably would have been preferable to the recent movie.
