It was my good fortune half a lifetime ago to spend time around Msgr. Lorenzo Albacete<\/a>, who passed away recently. Cardinal Se\u00e1n O’Malley, in his homily at Lorenzo’s funeral, tells some stories<\/a> that illustrate one side of Lorenzo’s memorable personality.<\/p>\n

It was also around that time when Lorenzo first met Cardinal O\u2019Boyle the Archbishop of Washington. Lorenzo and I spent a lot of time at St. Matthews Cathedral where I was working with Rosario Corredera and the Hispanic community. Lorenzo used to drive me very often. One day, as he was wont to do, Lorenzo parked in the Cardinal\u2019s parking space\u2026 (Any \u2018no parking\u2019 sign was an invitation to Lorenzo.) At that moment Cardinal O\u2019Boyle was approaching and confronted Lorenzo: \u201cwho are you,\u201d he asked. Lorenzo replied: \u201cI am the Cardinal\u201d. Cardinal O\u2019Boyle, who was something of a curmudgeon, answered back: \u201cI am the Cardinal!\u201d To which Lorenzo said: \u201cyes, you are the day Cardinal; I am the night Cardinal.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is no wonder that after his first Mass, Lorenzo\u2019s mother asked me to bless her new apartment. I said, \u201cBut, do\u00f1a Conchita, your son was just ordained.\u201d She said, \u201cYes, padre, but I think he is joking.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
