Wright <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scifiwright.com\/2019\/10\/quote-of-the-day-22\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recently quoted R.A. Lafferty<\/a>. Coincidentally, I spent part of the day moving all my Gene Wolfe and Lafferty books to their own bookcase. Over the years I&#8217;ve accumulated a bunch, most of them acquired on my regular visits to second-hand book stores.<span id='easy-footnote-1-62854' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/postcard-from-boomer-flats\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-62854' title='There are about twice as many Wolfe titles on the shelves as Lafferty, probably because Wolfe&amp;#8217;s career was longer and his popularity somewhat greater.'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Around the turn of the century, Lafferty&#8217;s books disappeared even from used sources. I found a volume or two and some pamphlets from mail-order sources<span id='easy-footnote-2-62854' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/postcard-from-boomer-flats\/#easy-footnote-bottom-2-62854' title='Remember buying things through the mail, &amp;#8216;way back before Amazon 2-day delivery? It was a good way to learn patience.'><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span>, but pickings were slim.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, now, about 30 years too late, there finally is a good introduction to the most original writer of the 20th century. <i><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1473213444\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Best of R.A. Lafferty<\/a><\/b><\/i> is available in the U.S. The table of contents is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackgate.com\/2019\/05\/12\/new-treasures-the-best-of-r-a-lafferty-edited-by-jonathan-strahan\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>; the book includes most of the essential stories.<span id='easy-footnote-3-62854' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/postcard-from-boomer-flats\/#easy-footnote-bottom-3-62854' title='My own selection would have been a little different, of course. &amp;#8220;Been a Long Long Time&amp;#8221; and &amp;#8220;One at a Time&amp;#8221; should have been included. I might also chosen &amp;#8220;Guesting Time,&amp;#8221; &amp;#8220;Rainbird,&amp;#8221; &amp;#8220;This Grand Carcass Yet&amp;#8221; (which I think was the first Lafferty I ever read), &amp;#8220;Hog-Belly Honey, &amp;#8221; and&amp;#8230;.'><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. If you&#8217;ve ever been curious about this teller of tales unlike other tales, this is a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels-613x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels-613x640.jpg 613w, https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels-768x802.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels-980x1024.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels-1200x1253.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/shuffly.net\/zoop\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/novels.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Three of Lafferty&#8217;s early novels have also recently been reissued in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/R-Lafferty-Novels-Chantey-Mansions\/dp\/147321341X\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a single volume<\/a>. It&#8217;s been a long time since I read <i><b>Past Master<\/b><\/i> or <i><b>Fourth Mansions<\/b><\/i>, so I can&#8217;t say much except that I didn&#8217;t like them as much as the better short stories. They&#8217;re due for a re-reading; I might find more in them now. However, <i><b>Space Chantey<\/b><\/i>, Lafferty&#8217;s retelling of <i><b>The Odyssey<\/b><\/i>, is one of Lafferty&#8217;s funniest books and an old favorite.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;All right, girl,&#8221; Roadstrum said when they were alone. &#8220;I have a few questions. They will be to the point, and I want answers.&#8221;<br \/>\nI doubt that you could understand the answers,&#8221; Aeaea warned. &#8220;I see now that you are a common simpleminded man, and we maintain a very high intellectual average here. It will be difficult to communicate.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Who is the &#8216;we&#8217; that maintains so high an average, girl?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Only myself now. My father has been dead these last several centuries.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It should be easy to maintain a high average with only one entity.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;It is. I am mistress of all the sciences. I go so far beyond all else that my work is called magic. I manipulate noumena, regarding monads as points of entry tangential to hylomorphism. As to the paradox of Primary Essence being contained in Quiddity, the larger in the small, I have my own solution. The difficulty is always in not confusing Contingency with Accidence. Do you understand me?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Sure. You&#8217;re a witch.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Exactly, but I frown on the name. Very unscientific.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p>I have several duplicate Lafferties on my shelves that need homes. If you are interested, send me an email.
