Absolutely.
On the other hand, this sort of thing can be devilishly hard when you’re talking about (a) something in a foreign language (b) in a subject where you’re not an expert.
It can be hard even with the script! Because even then, you’re probably just looking at a bunch of katakana, and it can be difficult to interpret just what foreign syllable they’re trying to represent. And that’s if they got everything right – occasionally the script is just blatantly wrong, too.
About the best you can do is hope that it makes sense in context or that some referent puts you on the right track. Take the “Hilbert effect” reference in Yumeria – we probably wouldn’t have gotten that right if I hadn’t just played Xenosaga, not because we didn’t find the reference, but because we thought we had it wrong because it made NO SENSE outside the context of that reference.
There’s at least one of the attack names in Nanoha A’s that had a similar problem. Bad katakana transcription of bad German, clearly not matching what the character was actually saying… though it could have been what they meant and the actress just blew the pronunciation epically, which happens too. Sigh…
How’s the show? Worth a few minutes’ time to try out?
Not bad so far, though I have reservations. It looks like the central conflict in To Aru Majutsu no Index is between science (including psychic powers — yeah, right) and magic, the latter apparently entwined with the history of Catholicism as understood by the show’s makers. It could be a good action show if it doesn’t become thematically asinine. In the second episode, the protagonist succeeds by out-thinking his opponent rather than by overpowering him: a good sign.
