I just got off the phone with my nine-year-old nephew. He’s a bright kid, a voracious reader, and he enjoys anime. He likes Bottle Fairy a lot. His favorite, though, is Serial Experiments Lain, which I sent to his father several years ago. Um, parents, keep tabs on what your kids watch. ((If any anime series is a classic, it’s Lain, but I hesitate to recommend it to anyone younger than college-age.))

Now he’ll grow up schizophrenic all because of you. Your fault.

I’d let anyone over 13 watch Lain. Nine seems a little young to me, but if it became the kid’s favorite, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Aside from Lain venturing into some tawdry parts of the Wired, and some horror, it’s pretty tame stuff.

dm: There are also some more unsettling things for a kid his age to watch, like drug use, that scene with Alice thinking about her teacher, and so on. But I also wonder how much of that he would get.
That being said, I’d also say that beginning high school is a good bet. 😛

Jura, the mental illness to come is my fault, after all I’m the one to whom it was sent. Understand, that it has been a foregone conclusion well before my son ever enjoyed the series. He is my son, after all. (little smiley-faced thing, here)

I for one have avoided Serial Experiments Lain for the same reason I avoided Chaos;HeAD: Because I have issues I don’t even feel comfortable talking to my own mother about, let alone a shrink. If you went through what I went through you would feel the same.

Since Serial Experiments Lain is a quite detailed retelling of the Biblical book Revelation, I would wonder about a potential viewer’s knowledge of that text. Whether kid or adult, the show is much more understandable if you make the connections.
