  1. During my Ph.D. program, I was reading Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy, and mentioned to one of my profs that it was humbling to think that I was where I was academically, but only then reading what used to be standard Freshman fodder.

    “Yes, Mr. [Mondo],” she replied, “and fifty years prior to that, they would have been reading it in Latin.”
