Call for nominations

It looks like Light Yagami is the best villain in the history of anime, at least for this week, with Gendo Ikari as a distant runner-up. So, let’s get started on the next poll. Which do you think is the best anime opening? Which exhibits the most creative combination of good music and imagery and is appropriate to its series? Here are some possiblities:

Azumanga Daioh
Baccano!
Cowboy Bebop
Haibane Renmei
Lucky Star
Noir
Paranoia Agent
Ramen Fighter Miki
Serial Experiments Lain

What else? Post your nominations in the comments, if possible with YouTube links.

  1. Well, my first toss would be Full Metal Panic Fumoffu because I love “Sore Ga Ai Desho” since forever, but I’m not particularly thinking hard at the moment for things that would work. Probably the Zetsubou Sensei OPs with their warped lyrics would be fitting. Same with Gankutsuou

  2. Skipping those mentioned already, there are two I’ve hit the “back” button on the DVD player for, so I can see more OPs than episodes: Aria (pretty much any of them), and Pani Poni Dash (just Roulette Roulette, not the other two songs, though all 3 OPs are decent).

For OPs I don’t recall ever skipping over, I’ll give Honorable Mentions to both seasons of Gunslinger Girl, Haruhi seaon 1, and Higurashi season 1.

And dishonorable mention to Steel Angel Kurumi for the OP being better than the show, desu.

  3. I’ve always been fond of the opening to Asura Cryin (mainly the music).

But I do find Cowboy Bebop to have an excellent one.

  4. Caveat: I’m more of a listener than a viewer for the openings, so there may not be any real creativity or novel concepts to the visual content in my nominations, but these are some of my faves I don’t skip past.
    Beck “Hit in the USA”
    Tenjho Tenge “Bomb A Head”
    Hare nochi Guu “Love Tropicana”
    Toradora “Pre Parade”
But my top is still the Excel Saga OP “Love (Loyalty)” not just because it was supposively written by Nabeshin the director at the last second, nor because it’s (probably meant as) a parody of j-pop bubblegummyness, but because it still delivers a very top notch catchy dancy peppy tune.
