… but I won’t vote for Cthulhu, either. Instead, here’s my choice for 2016:
• But they’re fictional characters! you say. And Donald Trump is real?
• But it’s against the Constitution! That might have been true in the past, but no longer. Nowadays, the meaning of the Constitution depends on what side of the bed Anthony Kennedy gets up on in the morning. It’s just a matter of picking the right day to present the question.
• But they’re not even from our world, let alone our country! Big deal. The same is true of the lousy golfer currently in the white house.
Do I expect Lelei and Rory to win? Probably not; I have a poor record with political endorsements. But there’s no question that an intelligent, responsible mage and a semi-divine warrior would do a better job leading the country than the present administration or the clown who wants to run the circus.
Before the anime and the manga versions of GATE, there was a series of light novels, which were based on an earlier novel serialized online. A little of the novels has been translated. Although they aren’t exactly great literature, they’re readable, and I’d like to read the rest. If you are a Japanese/English translator looking for a project, the light novels might be worth considering.
“Derpy Hooves 2016: we could do worse. And we probably will.”
Unfortunately, Lelei isn’t yet 35. So Rory would have to be the president and Lelei the VP. (The Constitution doesn’t say that the VP has to be 35, oddly enough.)
The last line of Amendment 12 applies the age limit to the VP: “But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”
The same reason we can’t, thank Rory, give someone a 3rd term by having them run as the veep with the promise that the prez will immediately resign.
