Rewriting history

The opening credits of the third Keroro Gunsou movie, Keroro vs. Keroro: The Great Sky Battle de arimasu!, recapitulate the opening episodes of the TV series. It shows Natsumi walloping Giroro with a bookbag. However, in episode four, she defeats him with a leek. Why the change? Are the writers afraid that viewers will confuse her with Hatsune Miku? (Update: I rewatched the fourth episode, and she does use a bookbag as well as a leek. Never mind.)

As in the previous Keroro Gunsou movies, action is emphasized over comedy, though there is still lots of silly stuff. This one focuses on Fuyuki and Keroro, a less interesting pair than Natsumi and Giroro, who were the center of the second movie. On a trip to Machu Picchu, Keroro inadvertently triggers an invasion of earth by another, more efficient squad of Keronians led by his clone — or something like that. I don’t quite understand the logic of the story, and I suspect that a second viewing will more likely reveal additional problems than clear up misunderstandings. But if you insist on airtight logic, you probably aren’t going to watch Keroro Gunsou anyway.

There’s lots of running through corridors and explosions, and Keroro gets to play with a 1:1 Gundam model. Ultimately the world is saved through the strength of characters’ friendships. It’s not a great movie, though, aside from a few vulgarities, it’s a tolerable entertainment for kids. Powered Natsumi does appear toward the end and, for some, that’s reason enough to watch.

Bonus Natsumi picture:

Natsumi is not quite herself here.

  1. Her costume and Giroro’s are from the second movie. As I recall, they didn’t have much choice about what to wear then.
