I wish there was something better than a comment to show my appreciation for this, but I love that your musical taste is so grand! I got to see Schickele in person (presenting the Ahn Trio playing Beethoven’s Archduke) at the theatre in Downtown KC, MO back around 1999 or 2000. His opening lecture was worth the price of admission, and the Ahn Trio was utterly brilliant, the subject and execution being the closest to perfection (outside of videos of Rostropovich performing Bach) I may have ever witnessed.
I know I’ve commented here in the past, but I can’t remember what name or email I used, but I do know I discussed how close you live to a town I used to live in.
I saw Schickele back when I was in college. The program included this Schleptet and the Concerto for Piano vs. Orchestra. I was in a balcony seat, and I had brought a pair of binoculars, so not only could I identify the issue of Playboy that he perused during his performance of the latter, but I also spotted the Batman comic under it in the piano.
I regularly pass 424 E. Avenue A on my way downtown — just did this morning, in fact.
Saw Schickele in the early 80’s in San Antonio. He zip-lined down to the stage from the mezzanine.
Completely agree with Normal about Schickele’s talks: I was a regular listener to his ‘Schickele Mix’ radio program back in the day and the man could put me more knowledge in a half hour than any number of textbooks or other NPR bloviators. He had the Gift.
