Specifically …

… which Shinkai and Miyazaki soundtracks do you want to nominate for the next poll? The complete works of Makoto Shinkai are on my “buy” list, but I don’t have them in hand yet; and, I can’t remember a note of Joe Hisaishi’s music after any Miyazaki DVD ends.

  1. Of Studio Ghibli films, specifically Miyazaki’s, it’s hard to go wrong. It’s even harder to separate the excellent music from the supreme quality of the films themselves. The atmosphere, pure emotions, and epic storytelling are mixed from equal parts gorgeous animation, sweeping music, and deft writing. You may not recall the pieces after the films, but I guarantee you, you’ll instantly recognize them if you heard them.

At the top of my list is Castle in the Sky, followed by Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke (music-wise, that is), but you could pick any of your favorites.

    Browse at your pleasure. 🙂

  2. Shinkai: It definitely has to be Five Centimeters per Second. Of all the Shinkai/Tenmon collaborations I’ve seen, 5cm/sec hit the sweet spot with regards to mood and composition in a way no other work of his has ever done. The Oukashou theme and Kanae’s theme come to mind.
