My dad was a member of what was then known as SPEBSQSA (Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America) and when I was in high school the national convention was held in Portland. Dad took us to a couple of performances, and they were awesomely good. I myself was a member of an a capella singing group at my high school (known as “The Madrigals”; and that’s what we mainly sang) and I could really appreciate just how good those men were.

    As to Dixieland, about 1990 I took a vacation in The Netherlands with my girlfriend, and one of the places we visited was a town in Friesland called Dokkum. There was a street festival that night, with different musical groups set up all over the middle of the town, and the best of them was a Dixieland band. And they were really good!
